Social rules and relations are communicated,\u00a0created, and changed in nonverbal and verbal ways. The process of\u00a0learning these skills is called socialization. Interpersonal skills to relate to\u00a0one another are essential for socialization. Interpersonal skills are the\u00a0interpersonal acts a person uses to interact with others, which are\u00a0related to love vs. hate, affiliation vs. aggression, dominance vs.\u00a0submission, and control vs. autonomy categories. Positive interpersonal\u00a0skills include active listening, delegation, persuasion, and stewardship,\u00a0among others. Social skills are learned by an individual through changes\u00a0in attitude, behavior, and thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Social skills are the tools that enable people to learn, ask for help,\u00a0communicate, get needs met in appropriate ways, develop healthy\u00a0relationships, get along with others, make friends, protect themselves,\u00a0and in general, be able to interact with the society harmoniously. Social\u00a0skills build essential character traits like respectfulness, responsibility,\u00a0caring, trustworthiness, fairness, and citizenship. These traits help to\u00a0build an internal moral compass, allowing individuals to make good\u00a0choices in behavior and thinking, resulting in social competence.<\/p>\n<p>The important social skills are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coordination \u2013 Adjusting actions in relation to others&#8217; actions.<\/li>\n<li>Mentoring \u2013 Helping and teaching others how to do something.<\/li>\n<li>Negotiation \u2013 Trying to reconcile differences and bringing others\u00a0together.<\/li>\n<li>Persuasion \u2013 Motivating others to change their mind or behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Service Orientation \u2013 Grow psycho-socially with people and actively\u00a0looking for ways to evolve compassionately.<\/li>\n<li>Social Perceptiveness \u2013 Ability to respond in an understanding manner\u00a0and being aware of others reactions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Deficits in social skills were categorized, as failure to model appropriate\u00a0models, a failure to recognize and reflect social skills, and failure to\u00a0perform an acceptable behavior in particular situations in relation to\u00a0transitional and developmental stages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-903\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fksg.org\/wp\/..\/sites\/fksg\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-21-at-14.48.43.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Social skills are significantly impaired in people suffering from alcoholism,\u00a0due to the neurotoxic effects of alcohol on the brain, especially the\u00a0prefrontal cortex area of the brain. The social skills that are impaired by\u00a0alcohol abuse, include impairments in theory of mind deficits,\u00a0perceiving facial emotions, and prosody perception problems.<\/p>\n<p>People with hyperkinetic disorder and ADHD often have difficulties with\u00a0social skills, such as social interaction. Approximately half of ADHD\u00a0children and adolescents will experience peer rejection, compared to\u00a010\u201315 percent of non-ADHD youth. Poor peer relationships can\u00a0contribute to major depression, substance use disorders, criminality,\u00a0and school failure.<\/p>\n<p>People with autistic spectrum disorders, such as Asperger&#8217;s syndrome,\u00a0have a deficit in social skills. This is most likely the result of the lack of\u00a0theory of mind, which enables the person to understand other people&#8217;s\u00a0emotions. Many people on the spectrum have many social idiosyncrasies\u00a0such as routines and obsessive interests, lack of eye contact, non-verbal\u00a0communication, one-sided conversations, and abnormal body language.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals with few opportunities to socialize with others often struggle\u00a0with social skills. This can often create a downward spiral for people\u00a0with mental illnesses like depression or anxiety. Due to depression,\u00a0people avoid opportunities to socialize, which impairs their social skills,\u00a0and makes socialization unattractive. Due to anxiety experienced from\u00a0fear of negative reaction from others and from concerns with\u00a0interpersonal evaluation, surfeit expectations of failure or social\u00a0rejection in socialization leads to shutting down or avoiding from social\u00a0interaction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A social skill is any competence facilitating communication and\u00a0interaction with others.
