Talking about\nmental health conditions helps to change negative attitudes and stereotypes.\nYou might be surprised by how many of your workmates have also experienced a\nmental health condition at some point&nbsp;in their life or supported a loved\none with a similar experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some&nbsp;benefits to sharing your story. Sharing\nyour story can: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>help others experiencing a mental health condition\nto take action.<\/li><li>show that people can continue to work and manage\nmental health conditions.<\/li><li>encourage others to speak openly about their\nexperience with a mental health condition. <\/li><li>encourage your employer to make workplace mental\nhealth a priority.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone has their own reason for sharing their story. You\ncan talk to your manager about your experience of depression, you also may\ndecide to&nbsp;tell your colleagues to help raise awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no right or wrong time to tell others at work. Planning out what you will say with a trusted person &#8211; a family member, a friend, support worker, or health professional &#8211; can help you structure your ideas and the points you want to cover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are thinking about talking to your manager or\nworkmates, the timing and setting can play a big part in how comfortable you\nfeel. Some things to consider might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Formal or relaxed &#8211; Some people prefer to set a\ntime and meet in a private room, while others feel more relaxed in a staff\narea.<\/li><li>Morning or afternoon &#8211; Are you more alert after\nyour morning coffee? Is your manager usually free just after lunch?<\/li><li>Short chat or longer discussion &#8211; How much time\nwill you need for the conversation? Your discussion only has\nto cover the information your employer needs to help you. You might find it\nuseful to think about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What are your reasons for talking about your\ncondition?<\/li><li>Explain how your condition is affecting your\nability to do your job &#8211; and if it is not having any impact, be clear on this\nto avoid incorrect assumptions.<\/li><li>Are there any particular&nbsp;things your\nmanager can do to support you, such as offering you flexible working conditions\nor an adjusted workload?<\/li><li>Are there problems at work that are contributing\nto your mental health condition, like stress, bullying or harassment?<\/li><li>Where can your manager get more information?<\/li><li>Focus on the positive &#8211; your skills and\nstrengths in your role.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with your manager, decide on the best way to talk\nabout any issues going forward.
