{"id":461,"date":"2017-04-16T19:44:41","date_gmt":"2017-04-16T19:44:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fksg.org\/?p=461"},"modified":"2017-04-16T19:44:41","modified_gmt":"2017-04-16T19:44:41","slug":"behind-closed-doors-family-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fksg.org\/test1\/behind-closed-doors-family-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Behind Closed Doors: Family Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Family violence (also called domestic violence or domestic abuse) is not only physical abuse but can be emotional, psychological, sexual,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>spiritual, economic or legal abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">All forms of family violence are unacceptable and illegal!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In Georgia, family violence covers a range of behaviors committed by a person against a family member. All the behaviors aim to control a family member through fear, and include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">physical abuse, for example, hitting or pushing<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">psychological or emotional abuse, including calling the person by names and controlling their behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">sexual abuse, including forcing a person to have sex or engage in sexual activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\">intentionally damaging a family member\u2019s property<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">economic abuse \u2013 includes controlling a family member\u2019s bank accounts and money without their consent<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">any other behavior that causes the family member to feel fear for their safety, the safety of another person.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">An act of family violence also occurs if a child sees, hears or is around family violence.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-903\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fksg.org\/wp\/..\/sites\/fksg\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-21-at-14.48.43.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Anyone can be affected by family violence, regardless of their gender, age, ability, sexual identity, religion, cultural background, wealth, status or location. Family violence is the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">leading contributor to preventable disability, illness and death among women<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0aged 15 to 44 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The family violence can occur in any familial relationship, for example, between: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">former or current intimate partners who are or were married or in de facto relationships, in same-sex or heterosexual relationships<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">between parents (or step-parents) and children<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">between siblings<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">between grandchildren, grandparents, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2018family-like\u2019 relationship, for example, in certain cultural traditions or between a person with a disability and their caregiver.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Socially, family violence weakens family and community structures. Victims of family violence may find it difficult to get a job or go to school, or they may turn to crime, alcohol or drugs. Some victims of family violence have committed suicide or lost their lives to violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>If you are affected by family violence, help and support at Family Kickstart Georgia (FKSG) are available.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">FKSG knows that the first step to healing is asking for help and, when that happens, we&#8217;ll be there to offer support and guidance.
