But like all drugs, alcohol can damage your body, especially if you drink in binges or heavily every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Alcohol affects your body in many ways. Some effects are immediate and last only a while, while others accumulate over time and may significantly affect your quality of life and mental and physical health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How much harm alcohol causes your body depends on your pattern of drinking, how much you drink, and even the quality of the alcohol you drink. Your age, gender, genetics, body size and composition, drinking experience, metabolism, nutritional status, and social factors all play a part.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The short-term effects of alcohol<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The short-term effects of a single occasion of drinking too much alcohol can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">lowered inhibitions<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">altered behaviour \u2013 including risky or violent behaviour<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">interpersonal conflict<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">falls and accidents<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">hangover<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">alcohol poisoning<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The severity of the short-term effects of alcohol typically depends on how much a person drinks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The long-term effects of alcohol<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Consuming on average more than two standard drinks a day may cause many long-term health problems and other harms. The alcohol contributes to more than 200 different types of disease and injury, some of the most common alcohol-related harms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">public and domestic violence, crime<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">road and other accidents<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">social dysfunction, breakdown<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">cancers, including of the oral cavity, oesophagus, pharynx, liver, larynx, colorectal and female breast<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver diseases<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">nutrition-related conditions, such as malnutrition and folate deficiency<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">overweight and obesity,<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">risks to unborn babies<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, and interference with antidepressant medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">alcohol tolerance and alcohol dependence or addiction<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">long-term cognitive impairment, self-harm (suicide)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In the long term, alcohol consumption can affect all aspects of a person\u2019s life: their work, relationships, finances, physical and mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-903\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fksg.org\/wp\/..\/sites\/fksg\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-21-at-14.48.43.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>How to avoid or reduce the effects of alcohol on your body<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The best way to avoid the effects of alcohol on your body is to not drink alcohol. This is especially important if you are trying to get pregnant, or you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as there is no safe level of alcohol use that has been identified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">If you choose to drink alcohol, low level drinking is better for your body than heavy drinking or binge drinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The lifetime risk of harm from drinking alcohol increases with the amount you drink, for healthy men and women, FKSG advise:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">Drinking no more than two standard drinks on any day reduces the lifetime risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">Drinking no more than four standard drinks on a single occasion reduces the risk of alcohol-related injury arising from that occasion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s important to monitor your alcohol consumption as part of a healthy diet.
