If the feelings of sadness affect everyday life, and lasts for weeks or months, the young person may have depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">In young people. symptoms of depression include feeling grumpy, having feeling worthless or guilty, trouble sleeping, eating less or more than usual and losing or gaining weight. Life situations can contribute to depression in young people but sometimes there seems to be no reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">If a young person has felt miserable most of the time and finds it difficult to get motivated, they may have <\/span><span class=\"s2\">depression<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0(also known as major depressive disorder), a serious illness that can affect adolescents and young people. Depression should be taken seriously, because suicide is a common cause of death in young people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Symptoms of depression in young people<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Young people, like everyone, can have occasional mood swings, feel irritable sometimes and be particularly sensitive to criticism and rejection. But if these moods have lasted for two weeks or more, the young person could have depression.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-903\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fksg.org\/wp\/..\/sites\/fksg\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-21-at-14.48.43.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Symptoms that may indicate depression include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling grumpy or irritable<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling guilty or worthless most of the time<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">having thoughts of suicide or death<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">having trouble sleeping \u2013 either staying asleep or falling asleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling everything is too hard, lack of motivation and feeling tired<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">gaining or <span class=\"s1\">losing weight, eating too much or losing interest in food<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">using alcohol, cigarettes or illegal drugs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sometimes there are no obvious symptoms of depression, but parents may notice behavioural changes in young people that suggest depression and should not be ignored. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">social withdrawal<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">lower marks at school<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">risk-taking behaviour<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">use of drugs and alcohol.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Causes of depression in young people<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Depression is a mental illness, and it is one of the most common health problems for young people in United States, so it is important that depression is diagnosed and treated early.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Many different factors and life circumstances can contribute to depression and anxiety in young people. These can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">experiencing a recent death, relationship break-up, neglect or abuse <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">fights with friends or family<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">starting secondary school or changing school<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">being bullied<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">biological factors like chemical imbalances or genetic factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Many people find it hard to ask for professional help and sometimes young people do not want to go to a healthcare professional. If this is the case, you could let them know that depression is common and that you are concerned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Help them to be safe and remove dangerous items, such as guns, medication or other dangerous items, and encourage them to see a Family Kickstart Georgia (FKSG) healthcare professional.
